“Whenever you are pissed off, write the article right away, otherwise you’ll never complete it!!” This, my friends, just happens to be one of those times. I promised to write not so many wrestling articles for this site, since it was dominating the Recent Posts page, but this is different. This is important. In my eyes at least, and in every wrestling fan’s eyes. Well, it damn well oughta be…allow me to elaborate.
Last night’s 9th July Raw, (episode number 998!), could easily be regarded as one of the worst Raw episodes in history. Besides Bob Backlund’s return, which was unfortunately received with an inadequate ovation for the legend that he is, there was not much else on Raw…besides toilet…rat-infested, stinky toilet.
The icing on the poo was, surprise surprise, a Santino Marella segment. Oh joy, our US Champion doing silly, unfunny comedy which makes him look like a total idiot. I know the whole point of Santino’s character is to be a total idiot, but he’s meant to be a funny idiot. This segment WAS NOT funny, it was embarassing and an atrocity to the wrestling business.
Santino comes out, proclaims he’s found the anonymous general manager, and that he can only be in one place. “Under the ring!!” As soon as he uttered those words, I screamed expletives at the TV screen that cannot be repeated here. The reason? The general manager was revealed to be none other than HORNSWOGGLE…Hornswoggle. If you don’t know who he is, here’s a photo below.

This little guy was ostensibly in control of WWE Raw, its flagship show, for almost 2 years, while under the ring on a laptop. WHAT WERE THESE PEOPLE THINKING???? Sometimes I really wonder if WWE Creative is just a pseudonym for Vince Russo and Ed Ferrera, I mean it. One of the biggest angles WWE has done in recent history ended in a two-bit unfunny comedy sketch which lasted for five minutes.
Not to mention, this was an angle that practically ended a year ago. It was dropped without notice after Wrestlemania 27. No one cares about it anymore, everyone forgot about it. The best way I can compare this to something that anyone can understand is this:
Take a film director, say, Joss Whedon, he’s popular, and suppose that he is hyping this huge new action film, a massive, awesome movie that he promises to release soon, and it will be starring Neil Patrick Harris. Then, suddenly, the hype dissapears, no adverts, nothing. Everyone forgets about the new film and nobody cares about it anymore. Now around a year later, with no warning, the film is released in cinema. Instead of being the promised action film, its an awful child-orientated unfunny comedy film starring Youtube “star” Fred.
I showed this moment to a friend of mine, and he isn’t a wrestling fan. His initial reaction was “what is this crap?” I felt embarassed to be a fan of the business. Whoever in Creative came up with this deserves to be fired. Fired, never to work in wrestling again. Then after that, locked in a port-a-loo and set on fire. This is an atrocity. Not forgetting Santino and Hornswoggle, they are as much to blame as Creative. They could have easily said they didn’t want to take part in the segment. But they did, so they obviously didn’t care about the WWE product, because believe me, otherwise, they’d have spoken up. I have lost respect for both of these supposed “superstars”.
You can see why Bruno Sammartino has rejected a Hall of Fame induction from WWE with reasons that he “doesn’t like the direction the company is in.” Dammit, none of us like it!
A huge angle, promised to be the biggest of the previous summer, was turned into a 5 minute unrewarding, unfunny comedy sketch. Let’s put it this way, TNA gave us Austin Aries as World Champion, WWE gives us Hornswoggle as Raw GM. What show are you going to watch? I think its fairly obvious.
