So recently I have started an apprenticeship in Chessington (not the world of adventures) where I work on reception, but it is harder than some people think.
I found that there is more to reception duties then just sitting around and answering phones.
You have to book people in for courses and exams exams; take payments for them as well as transferring phone calls and taking messages for people. Okay, so it doesn’t seem that hard, but when you have only been there for a week it is…
There are so many things that you will need to know including phone numbers and people. They are aware that I won’t remember everyones name, but they do test me a little.
There are so many questions that I ask which I could find out for myself, but I don’t want to get things wrong the first time. This means that I learn what to do in the job and the people that I work with talk me through what needs to be done. Not only does this mean that I learn what I’m doing but it also means that I don’t have to ask the others what to do in certain situations.
I start my NVQ for business admin this week which I’m excited about. I don’t know what to expect from the NVQ, so I hope that it will be helpful in my current job and future jobs.
Many of the people that I work with are really nice. The trainees for the different courses such as plumbing or electrics are nice, as I have seen some of them a lot for different exams.
I do sit around answering phones and transfering calls but I do actually have to know about the courses and basics of the company, so I can provide people with help if they are uninformed. Not everything is that easy you know!
